Choosing the Right Commercial Skips Size: A Guide for Businesses
Choosing the wrong skip for a residential clearout may mean having to pay a bit more than was necessary, or perhaps having to make a quick dash to the local tip to get rid of things you couldn’t fit in, but the consequences are rarely more serious than that.
Getting the wrong skip for a commercial project, on the other hand, can have far more damaging repercussions, from smashing a tight budget to disrupting a tight schedule.
Here at Enfield Skips, we want you to be 100% happy with the service you get when you hire our skips, and that includes doing all we can to help you make the right choice when it comes to hiring the skip you need.
In this article, we’re going to examine the sort of issues you need to consider when choosing which skip to hire for your business.
How do commercial skips differ from domestic skips?
The waste produced in the commercial sector tends to be very different from that generated by a residential refit or clearout. Skips hired by members of the public are usually at the smaller end of the scale and hired for shorter periods for individual projects.
Skips for businesses, however, tend to be bigger for the simple reason that companies generally produce far greater amounts of waste.
They also often produce it over prolonged periods, perhaps as part of their production processes or as a result of having to dispose of large amounts of packaging materials.
For such large volumes, we have a range of roll on/roll off skips available for long and short-term hire, the largest being 40 yards (i.e. 40 cubic yards).
If you need skips for construction or demolition projects, you need to think a bit deeper, because a large proportion of the waste produced is going to be in the form of bricks, rubble and concrete – in other words, heavy waste.
You have to be careful not to load too much of this kind of waste into large skips, as the weight can quickly become unmanageable.
Choosing the right commercial skip
These are just a few of the things you need to think about when deciding which of our commercial and construction skips is the right one for you to hire.
Size and Weight of the skip
Probably the most basic consideration, but one you nevertheless want to get right!
We’ve already outlined some of the issues you need to think about, and if the waste you want to dispose of is bulky and not too heavy, then it could simply be a case of working out the volume of waste you have and then choosing the nearest equivalent size from our range of skips.
For heavy construction and demolition waste, such as soil, bricks and rubble, the 8 yard skip – often referred to as a builders skip – is as large as you can really go (as well as being the biggest that can go on a public road).
Any bigger and our lorries wouldn’t be able to safely lift and load it onto the truck. We’ll be happy to advise if you need further advice about weight limits on our skips.
How long will you need the skip for?
If the waste you need to dispose of isn’t too heavy and you’re going to be generating it over a long period, then the best solution might be to hire one of our largest skips and have it regularly replaced as and when it gets full.
If that sounds like a good solution for you, you might want to enquire about signing up for a trade account, which will make handling the financial side of things just as easy as the big skip will make managing your waste!
Accessibility
It’s no good you hiring the biggest commercial or construction skips we have if you don’t have the space available at your site to put them anywhere.
You might also have narrow access points that might prevent us from getting our larger skips where you need them.
Take the time to measure and/or configure your working area to make sure the skip you want won’t block up your entire site!
