Skip or Tip?

Recycling, Skip Hire

Skip or Tip?

When you have large quantities of waste to dispose of, it often comes down to a simple choice: are you going to hire a skip or are you going to ferry it all to the tip or local recycling centre yourself?

There are a number of considerations you need to make when trying to reach this decision, so here are five reasons we think a skip will often be the best solution.

One skip = many trips to the tip

If you have a lot of waste, then chances are you’re going to need several trips to the tip to get rid of it – unless you have a van, but then you often have to pay extra charges to take a vanload in. It may cost more to hire the skip, although you shouldn’t forget that we won’t be beaten on price, so you can be confident that you won’t get better value. But when you take into account the cost of the petrol you’ll use over the course of those many trips, plus the amount of time it will take you to do it, and suddenly the added convenience of the skip looks much more worth it.

We’ll separate and recycle your waste

When you get to the tip, you have to separate the waste yourself and take each type to its own section. That can add a considerable amount of time to each trip. When you hire a skip, everything goes in together and we do all the work of sorting it for you.

We also make sure that everything that can go for recycling will go for recycling. We aim to recycle at least 90% of the waste we collect, but it’s often much more than that.

No queues

It can take up a lot of time taking several loads between home and tip, but it will take even longer if you pick the wrong time to go. If you’ve decided to do a garden clearance because it’s a nice weekend, or a garage clearance because it’s a wet weekend, then other people will probably be thinking the same thing. Long queues at the tip can be very frustrating, especially when you know you’ll be back queuing again soon with the next load.

And even if your local tip is now operating a booking system, as many have been since the pandemic, will it let you book multiple trips in one day or weekend?

With a skip, you just load it as you go along, and then we come along and pick it up when you’re ready. That means all the time you’re spending on the job is productive, leaving you more time to relax and recover afterwards.

Less work

Not only will you be spending less time filling one skip than you would do filling (and emptying) several carloads, you’ll also be expending a lot less energy. Although you need to take some care about the way you load your skip – you’ll find some helpful tips on how to go about doing that in this previous article – essentially you can just throw much of it in and then forget about it.

Better for your car

After your house, your car is likely to be the most expensive thing you own, so why treat it like a glorified dump truck? Loading it with all kinds of rubbish is not only likely to make a mess of the interior that will need cleaning up afterwards (another unnecessary task you won’t have to worry about when you hire a skip), but you’re also running the risk of causing damage if you’re loading heavy or sharp items. Nor will you be doing it any good with all those short trips – especially if there’s a lot of stopping and starting in a long queue as well.
